The Civilian ConnectionThe citizens of Ancient Greece believed that the Gods governed their lives and guided their fate. The immortals of Mount Olympus were thought to control every aspect of everyday living, from harvest to the weather. Several hundred Greeks have claimed to witness the Gods and Goddesses. Athena and Hera were often seen in battle, whispering strategies or providing thoughts of the family at home. The Gods were said to have disguised themselves often to mingle with mortals, many even had demi-god children (the offspring of a god and mortal). The gods were worshiped with offerings such as animals or crops. Temples devoted to each God or Goddess were maintained by priests and priestesses. Citizens would travel to these temples to ask for certain things. For example, a farmer with failing crops may visit the temple of Demeter with an offering in hopes of gaining her favor.
