The modern Olympics were restarted in Athens, 1859, and Greece and countries in the Ottoman Empire competed. In 2008, 204 countries participated with an astounding 10,500 competitors. The games are set to alternate every two years between the summer and winter Olympic Games, recreating the four year distance between games of the original Greek Olympics (summer to summer/winter to winter). Unlike the Greek Olympics, the modern Olympics change host cities. The peace to hold the games remains the same however, putting the world on hold for two weeks as people watch their country's best athletes compete for gold.
